EMERALD BAY STATE PARK
Emerald Bay State Park is a treasure trove of easy-moderate hiking trails. Near campsite 28 in Eagle Point Campground is the beginning of the Overlook Trail, a short (0.5 mile) walking trail to a camera-ready spot. Near campsite 34 and the campfire center amphitheater you can park in a lot and take one of two trails. The first is another short walk to an overlook. The second is the Rubicon Trail (1.7 miles), which takes you to Vikingsholm. This is the longer route, as opposed to the steep 0.5-mile trail to Vikingsholm that you can pick up from the Harvey West Parking Lot. The well-marked trail features undulating terrain, shade, and gorgeous views. The first mile is a gentle downhill slope, overlooking the lake on the right. The water at the edge is so shallow and clear that you can see the lake bottom from your perch on the trail. If it’s been a wet year, some sections may be muddy, so wear boots. From the bridge, take a brief (0.2-mile) detour to your left to visit Lower Eagle Falls, or turn right to reach the visitors center in less than a mile. At the visitors center, you can buy tickets for a Vikingsholm tour or just walk another 0.2 mile to explore the Vikingsholm grounds on your own. Bring food, water, money for the tour, and a bathing suit to take a dip in the very cold water near the sandy beach beside Vikingsholm. Eagle Point Campground was scheduled for repairs through the 2015-2016 seasons. Call ahead to check on trail access.
Altogether, the Rubicon Trail runs 4.5 miles along the shoreline of Emerald Bay. Hikers who complete it will see osprey nests and an old wooden lighthouse in addition to the many other highlights.
